Out of the Nutshell, A Tree Growed Tall...
New Hope (PA) • Philadelphia (PA) • Tokyo (日本) • Greensboro (NC) • Vienna (VA)
Graduate school.
Starting a family.
Working and studying the martial arts in Japan.
Beginning a new career in North Carolina.
Through it all, I wrote songs and played away, taking every opportunity to play live in pubs, beer gardens, coffee shops, and private events.
In Greensboro, I finally got a keyboard — a Yamaha SY-77 synthesizer — to replace the Fender Rhodes electric piano I'd "had" to give away to a friend when moving to Tokyo. And my musical horizons expanded.
"Energy & Movement" came of learning my way around the SY-77.
Kept that fabulous synthesizer until I "had" to give it to friend when moving to O'ahu.
Vienna
In the mid-90s I moved to Vienna, Virginia.
While there, I co-founded Peripheral Visions, a decidedly progressive-rock band.
To play "In the Dreamtime," I needed to play both a 6- and 12-string electric. Remarkably we found a Gibson twin-neck on sale for a ridiculously low price — and I bought it.
My son, also a musician, is now the proud owner of that guitar.
As the Peripheral Visions lead guitarist was also a techie, we leapt into creating an ADAT-recording studio.
This was my first experience learning the ins and outs of serious recording — and I'm very happy I'm no longer struggling to get two ADATs to talk to one another via optical cables!
Today's computer-based Digital Audio Workstations are a breeze in comparison.
Weirdly, as the band disintegrated — a long story! — the ADATs and all our recordings disappeared. To this day, I do not know where they disappeared to. A real loss.
