A Grim Grimm Fairy Tale
Music & lyrics, 2021
A miller told the king
My daughter spins gold from straw
It was a lie
It was a lie
The king he wanted gold
More than anything in the world
He believed the lie
He believed the lie
The king locked the girl in a room filled with hay no horse would ever eat
The king threw the miller in a dungeon
His hostage there to keep
The girl wept as the sun went down
There was no way out
An ugly little man appeared
“I can help you out
“Spin all this straw into gold
“But I don’t work for free
“I don’t work for free”
“What’ll you pay me to save your lives
“Give the king the riches he so craves?
“What’s in it for me?
“What’s in it for me?”
“I give you my necklace, this golden ring
“Gifts from my mother now dead
“I am a poor country girl
“I have nothing left to give”
“My gold will make you queen
“Give me your first-born child
“He will be mine!”
Three men, one girl
The odds were stacked against her
Three men, one girl
There’s something wrong with this fairy tale picture
Three men, one young woman
They would control her body
Three men one girl
This is a grim Grimm fairy tale
This is a grim Grimm fairy tale
She may have been a poor country girl
But her mother had taught her well
She knew the ways of this dark world
She knew the ways of the world
When the king said, “You will be my queen!”
She stood her ground & said, “Thank you — no!
“Greedy men turn me off!
“Tyrants like you turn me off!”
The ugly little man lost his temper
Flew into a rage
Consumed with anger, engulfed in flames
His body burned away
The lying miller
In that dungeon dark?
There he would stay
Three men, one girl
The odds were stacked against her
Three men, one girl
Never underestimate a pretty face
Three men, one young woman
“Keep your hands off my life!”
Three men, one girl
So ends this grim Grimm fairy tale
So ends this grim Grimm fairy tale
