The River Is Mine
Music & lyrics, 1981
She was born
From the sea
Her eyes reflected the sun
As it rose from beneath the waves
Red clouds in the sky
Dragons to the east
She came to Crete
Where she lay naked
By a river
Which flowed from mountains of blackened trees
Across the deserts and into the sea
She cried to the heavens, implored the gods
To give her the river
To giver her it all
She cried —
The river is mine
To the gods in the sky
The river is mine
You can't step in the same river twice
No!
Her eyes were clear
Her body pure
Her heart, the heart of a Goddess
As she lay by the river in the gold sunset
A god lay with her and in her was spent
A child was born, the child of the river
And the waters flowed on, the river the giver
She cried —
The river is mine
To the gods in the sky
The river is mine
You can't step in the same river twice
No!
The river is mine
To the gods in the sky
The river is mine
The river today's not the river tomorrow
No!
The river flows from the land to the sea
The river melts into ecstasy
